The NCS Blazing Squad Team exploring play at Beaumont Park

A team of young people are spending some of their Summer raising money for us so that we can put on more free Forest School and community activities for children and families.  The fifteen 15 and 16 year olds are working with Nature’s Footprints on a social action project as part of their National Citizens Service, and hope to raise around £1000 that will help fund future projects.

Jo Liversidge, Managing Director of Nature’s Footprints said: ‘We are incredibly pleased to be working with Team Blazing Squad. They joined us on Friday for a Forest School session to do some research, meet some of the teenagers who attend our sessions and explore what it’s like to play, and showed us that they completely understand what we do and why we do it and impressed us with their energy, enthusiasm, ideas and teamwork.

‘£1000 will make a huge difference to us as it would fund two 2-hour Forest School sessions for 4-8 year olds and one 4-hour Forest School session for 8-12 year olds, working with 60 local children, and would also allow us to buy some essential kit such as tarpaulins, water carriers or fire bowls.

‘Recent local funding and budget cuts and restructuring have hit us hard and after 5 years’ of being able to offer up to 1500 free places a year at our Holiday Forest School sessions, we’re having to seriously rethink our future, what we can continue to provide and if we can find new ways to fund our work.’

After winning £60 from a Dragon’s Den-type pitching competition to kickstart their project, the team have until Wednesday to raise as The NCS Blazing Squad Team exploring play with Nature's Footprintsmuch money as they can.  They will start on Monday by completing a 10-mile sponsored walk in fancy dress around Huddersfield. Starting at The Zone and finishing at Nature’s Footprints’ base in Beaumont Park, they will go via Huddersfield Station, Greenhead Park, and Linthwaite, collecting donations along the way.  On Tuesday they will be bag-packing at a local supermarket, and on Wednesday they will be holding a raffle and auction at Beaumont Park as part of the free Summer Play Day event being run by Nature’s Footprints and Friends of Beaumont Park.  As part of the day, the team will also be running a ‘Teen Zone’ with games, sports and campfire cooking and will be helping marshall other events such as a Junior Park Run Fun Run.

Natalia Rhodes from Team Blazing Squad said, ‘We’ve set up a Facebook page (NCS Blazing Squad), and a GoFundMe page (NCS Natures Footprints) and we’ve managed to collect some great prizes from friends and family, local businesses and supporters of Nature’s Footprints, such as, the Huddersfield Town Foundation, Dark Woods Coffee, Forever Green and I Love Cheesecake. These include a signed Huddersfield Town football, England cricket merchandise and vouchers for everything from cheesecake to massages and hairdressing.  We’ve put the football on Ebay and are selling raffle tickets to win everything else.’
